Understanding SQL Trace, TKPROF and Execution Plan for Beginners

01:01:38
Presenter: Carlos Sierra, Oracle Corporation In this session, participants will learn about producing a SQL Trace then a summary TKPROF report. A sample TKPROF is navigated with the audience, where the trivial and the not so trivial is exposed and explained. Execution Plans are also navigated and explained, so participants can later untangle complex execution plans and start diagnosing SQL performing badly.

Oracle X$TRACE, Wait Event Internals and Background Process Communication

01:48:41
In this session we will look into some internals of Oracle background process communication and also some special types of wait events that most people aren’t aware of. We will use some exotic tracing for internals research and fun and some of this stuff is actually useful in real life too! I’m not going to reveal everything upfront, as this is a secret internals hacking session after all ;-) We will use various techniques to research what the “reliable message” wait event is about and how reliable background process communication is orchestrated in Oracle. This is a hacking session, not formal structured training, so I’ll just do free form demos and talk (probably no slides, just hacking stuff on the command line). Solving Performance Problems on Oracle DB

28:11
Solving Performance Problems on Oracle DB Matthew Vegh - Embarcadero Thursday, June 26, 2014 - 11am DBAs and database developers regularly spend a lot of time tracking down and resolving performance issues on the database servers they are responsible for; it can be very difficult, frustrating, and expensive. Given the complex interactions of applications, users and databases, new performance issues can arise almost as fast as old ones can be addressed. This session will simulate common performance problems on an Oracle server and then both identify those problems and provide effective solutions. Matthew Vegh is a Software Architect at Embarcadero Technologies for the Embarcadero DB Power Studio family of products and has been with the company for the better part of a decade. He has over 15 years of development experience with a wide range of technologies and a definite preference for database tooling.

Working with the Trace File Analyzer Collector

28:22
The Trace File Analyzer (TFA) Collector Tool is a utility for collecting first failure diagnostics when creating Service Requests with Oracle Support. Using TFA Collector to make diagnostic collections removes questions about what files to collect and upload. TFA knows about all the well known Oracle and operating system diagnostic locations and collects only files that have been modified proximate to problem time specified from any of those well known locations. Larger files are also pruned proximate to problem time specified to reduce the size of the upload. If the system is a clustered environment TFA collects relevant diagnostics from the remote nodes as well. All of this can be accomplished with one simple command. Key features of TFA Collector include: RAC and single instance non-RAC support Time-based collection of relevant files OS Clusterware ASM DB OSW and CHMOS etc Large file pruning Cluster-wide time-relevant collections Analytics for key files DB alert logs Clusterware alert logs ASM alert logs system messages OSWatcher top and slabinfo data Flexible command-line interface Copyright © 2014 Oracle and/or its affiliates. Identifying Long Running Queries

01:10:08
Tuning the performance of your queries in SQL Server can be a lot of work. However, in order for your systems to receive the full benefits of query tuning, you must tune the queries that need it the most. This session will show you three different methods for determining which of the queries on your system are being called the most frequently, take the longest period of time to run, or are using the most resources. You'll be able to use the information in this session to quickly set up your own metrics gathering processes in order to understand what is happening on your systems and which queries will benefit most from tuning. Grant Fritchey is a SQL Server MVP with over 20 years’ experience in IT including time spent in support and development. Grant has worked with SQL Server since version 6.0 back in 1995. He has developed in VB, VB.Net, C# and Java. Grant has authored books for Apress and Simple-Talk, and joined Red Gate as a Product Evangelist in January 2011.
